Using Kali Linux (Backtrack 6) on your computer (Windows) can be done on a Virtual Machine.
There are many virtual machines (VM) applications available and VirtualBox is a very good choice with easy configuration and so installing any guest OS can be easily accomplished.
- Download VirtualBox exe format from this direct link or Official site and install it.
- Download Kali Linux ISO file from official site: kali (you can choose between direct link or torrent, 32 or 64 bit depending on your system)
- Disable any other running VM if installed (eg. Hyper-V is a VM that is integrated with Windows 8, disable it if running).
1/ VirtualBox machine installation:
- Now open VirtualBox and click ''New''. Enter the VM Name of your choice (eg. KaliLinux). Select type as Linux and version as ''Other64 bit'' as I am using ''Kali AMD64 bit'' (choose ''Other32 bit'' if you are using 32 version. Click ''Next''.- Select 1024mb minimum Ram Size:
- Select ''Create a Virtual Hard Drive Now'' for installing Kali Linux on VirtualBox:
- Select ''VirtualBox Disk Image''. Click ''Next'':
- Choose ''Dynamically Allocated'' and Click ''Next'':
- Keep the settings as it is and Click ''Create''. This will create your Virtual machine and configure virtual hard disk:
- At this point you have built a virtual Machine with a virtual hard disk and ram. Now we need to fine tune this machine according to our requirement. To do this Click on ''Settings''. Click on ''General'' and check if your VM is created:
- Click on ''Storage''. You can mount your ISO as the virtual cd/dvd. Please follow the steps 1 to 4 as shown in image below:
- Locate and Select the Kali Linux ISO file from your local hard disk:
- Make changes to the ''USB'' settings as follows:
- Click ''Ok''. You will now have your virtual machine booting from Kali Linux ISO.
2/ Kali Linux installation:
- Choose ''Graphical install'' and Click ''Enter'':- Choose your preferred language option:
- Choose your Country and click continue:
- You may encounter a network configuration error as we have not set any internet connection with the installation. Click on Continue:
- Kali Linux will then create partitions on the virtual hard disk for further installation. The partition table data and sizes required are calculated automatically. You just need to continue at this step.
- Click and Install the Grub boot loader on the virtual hard disk. This is necessary to boot your Kali Linux system without any external media:
- After Installing Kali Linux we will ‘Finish the installation’ and click continue.
- Let the system shut down:
- Go to VirtualBox Settings. Click on Storage and remove disk from virtual drive. If the disk is not removed after installing Kali linux on virtual box, the Virtual machine will boot from the rom:
- Now let us configure the Network settings. Enter the settings as shown in the pic below. These settings are required for an Ethernet connection. Your Ethernet adapter settings are shared along with the virtually with the VirtualBox:
- If you want to share your local pc’s internet connection with your Virtual box just enable the network adapter 2 and select ‘NAT’. The settings works even for even the internet connection dialed via usb modems:
- Your installation and configuration of Kali Linux on Virtual box is complete! You can now boot your system and use your pc as you use the local machine :)
