HTC One M9 ditches duo camera and keeps dazzling design

After months of speculation, leaks and rumours the HTC One M9 has finally been uncovered during a special event at MWC 2015. The natural successor to the One M8, the One M9 builds on the five-star smartphone in a number of ways.

Those familiar with both the M8 and the original One will notice the One M9 has merged the design of both handsets - and it looks good, with its new coloured sidewalls providing a more distinctive design.
One of the big changes, however, is found on the back, where the Duo Camera setup from the One M8 has been dumped in favour of a single 20MP snapper.
It's not the end of HTC's ultrapixel dream though, as the M8's main 4UP camera now resides on the front of the One M9, providing solid low light performance for those all important selfies.

One M9

Louder, faster, longer lasting

You'll find the same 5-inch, full HD display on the One M9, while the front facing Boomsound speakers have been given an injection of Dolby Audio technology.
HTC tells us this will give you richer, louder beats - both from the internal speakers and anything plugged into the 3.5mm headphone jack.
One screen the One M9 is rocking Android 5.0 Lollipop and HTC's latest user interface Sense 7. It's focussed on customisation, and there's a new Themes Editor application to help you apply that personal touch to your device.
Storage fans will be glad to hear the One M9 keeps hold of its microSD port to go with the 32GB of internal storage, plus there's 100GB of free Dropbox for two years for anyone who picks up the handset.
Under the hood Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 810 processor is in charge of running the show with 3GB of RAM to play with, and the battery size has been boosted to 2800mAh. We hope the increase equals more usage between chargers.
You'll be able to pick up the HTC One M9 in three colour combinations, gold on silver, gun metal on grey and gold on gold, with a global release date of March 31 set for various (but yet to be confirmed) global markets.
Select partners will have the handset available for pre-order from March 9. Unlocked and Developer Editions of the HTC One M9 will also be available from via htc.com come March 31.

HTC One M9 - the new features

1. More compact, lighter

Measuring 144.6 x 69.7 x 9.61mm, the HTC One M9 is more compact, yet slightly thicker than the One (M8), which clocks in at 146.36 x 70.6 x 9.35mm. Additionally, the new entrant weighs 157gr, while the One (M8) tipped the scales at 160gr.

2. Dual-finish design

The HTC One M9 comes with a dual-finish body, which means that the front and the rear are flashing different colors

3. A faster chipset

The HTC One (M8) came with a quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset inside, but the One M9 is equipped with a newer and faster Qualcomm-made chip - the Snapdragon 810. The latter, as you probably know, is an octa-core 64-bit silicon - a perfect match for the 64-bot capable Android on board.

4. More RAM = better multitasking

We get 3GB of RAM inside the HTC One M9, an improvement over the 2GB inside the previous iteration of the One flagship family. Well, the device is not a 4GB beast, but the amount of memory inside HTC's 2015 representative would most probably cater to the whims of 90% of all users.

5. A 20MP camera at the rear

HTC has fortunately nixed the under-performing UltraPixel camera that graced the backs of both the One (M7)/One (M8) and opted for a larger one, a respectable 20MP shooter. The UltraPixel camera of the HTC One (M8) had its merits, but it was generally under-performing compared to the competition. The new 20MP rear camera will potentially put it in the league of the big Android boys. In particular, it has an f/2.2 aperture, a 27.8mm lens, allows you to record 4K video, and has a protective sapphire lens coating.

6. An UltraPixel selfie shooter

The One M9 secured a respectably-sounding 20Mp rear camera, but the UltraPixel one is still here to stay. It's on the front and will take care of your selfies. Specs-wise, the camera has an f/2.0 aperture, a 26.8mm lens, and will shoot a 1080p should you require it to do so.

7. A bigger, 2,840mAh battery

The HTC One (M8) boasted a 2,600mAh battery at the back, but its successor amps up this capacity to 2,840mAh. Paired with a more energy-efficient hardware and software, the One M9 will most probably outclass the One (M8) in terms of battery life.

8. HTC Sense UI with Android 5.0 Lollipop

The HTC One M9 comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box. Naturally, it comes with HTC's Sense UI running atop.

9. Bluetooth 4.1 with aptX

HTC's new flagship comes with Bluetooth 4.1 on board. In addition, the aptX audio-centric codec is supported, which is greatly improving the overall quality of the streaming audio quality.
